CAN WE BEAT THE BIOLOGICAL CLOCK? AGEING
A burgeoning field of inquiry involves methods of slowing the aging process. Anti-aging research to date has focused on medicinal herbs, hormones, and nutrients that enhance health but do not necessarily lengthen the genetically determined life span. A popular belief has been that each cell has a figurative biological clock that predetermines senescence and maximizes life span. For
years scientists have tried to identify the exact nature of the clock, and recently, they seem to have done so. It seems that each time a normal cell divides it loses small portions of the ends of its chromosomes, which are regions called telomeres. When telomeres are shortened to a certain critical length, the cell can no longer divide. This results in the cell growing old and eventually dying.
Part of this division activity requires bonding of proteins to each other through a process known as hydrogen bonding. It is known that hydrogen bonds are influenced by magnetic fields, and there is a possibility that magnetic fields can be used to affect hydrogen bonding in a way that will reset the biological clock.
Another factor in aging is a decrease in the production of the hormone DHEA, which was first discovered back in 1934. It is known that magnetic energy can influence hormone production from the pineal gland. It will be interesting to determine if this therapy can influence the production of dehydroepidandrosterone DHEA, with a resultant
slowing of the aging process. Produced by the adrenal glands, odd shaped organs that sit atop the kidneys, levels of this hormone drop dramatically, as people grow older. Estimates are that youthful peak the body produces about 25-50 milligrams per day of DHEA and DHEA sulfate combined. The National Institute of health is supporting studies of DHEA. The potent adrenal hormone might fit into your health care
strategies. Emphasis is on presenting a balanced picture, not simply the studies that support a role for DHEA, but those that delve into the negative aspects of replacement hormone therapy as well. It’s intention is to help you build a program for a longer healthier life incorporating DHEA supplements. DHEA alone has a short lifespan: The new compound, DHEA sulfate (DHEAS) is more stable.
Magnets activate life-promoting enzymatic activity, which, in turn, encourage normal cell division. This creates a healthier organism and may then slow the aging process. Several studies on animals show magnetic therapy to increase lifespan. In order to balance the energy of the organs and glands throughout the body, it has been suggested that one apply
magnetic fields to the whole body. Sleeping on a magnetic bed is an excellent way to accomplish this. Drinking magnetized water is another good habit to get into.
MELATONIN is a hormone manufactured from Serotonin (an important neurotransmitter, and secreted by the pineal gland, a small pea sized gland at the base of the brain. The ancient Greeks considered the
pineal gland to be the seat of the soul. The identification of Melatonin in 1958 provided the first solid scientific evidence of an essential role of the pineal gland is to manufacture and secrete Melatonin. The exact of Melatonin is still poorly understood, but it is critically involved in the synchronization
of hormone secretion. It has been shown to posses antioxidant effects. Although there appear to be no side serious effects at recommended dosages, Melatonin supplementation could conceivably disrupt normal circadian rhythms. The dosage typically recommended
(3 mg per day). In one study a dosage of 8 mg per day for only four days resulted in significant alterations in circadian rhythm as noted by changes in the secretion patterns of several hormones. It is not known what sort of effect would occur at commonly recommended dosages. Melatonin has a place in the treatment of insomnia, jet lag, and possibly even some forms of cancer. Certainly, Melatonin supplementation is appropriate as replacement therapy that is supplementing Melatonin at a level that compensates for decreased synthesis (0.1 to 0.3 mg). But should higher dosages of Melatonin
be used as an antioxidant to promote longer life? It is more important to focus on other factors.
At this point there is no "Magic Bullet" to halt the aging process. However there are steps that can be taken to slow the aging process and reduce the risk of the major causes of premature death. The best way to ensure a long, healthy, high quality life is to adopt the guidelines described in the four cornerstones of Good Health.
While trying to lengthen one's life span quality is important, we want to encourage you to focus on improving the quality of your life as well.
DIET: a high intake of vegetables and fruits is essential to a life-extension program, due to high content of vitamins, minerals, carotenes, flavonoids, and dietary fibers in these foods. It is especially important to follow the dietary recommendations for reducing the risk of heart disease, such as increasing intake of cold-pressed vegetable
oils, fish, and dietary fiber, especially the gel-forming or mucilaginous fibers (flaxseed, oat bran, pectin, ect.), while reducing consumption of saturated fats, cholesterol, sugar, and animal proteins.
The Telomere Shortening Theory: Based on the Hayfick limit, experts on aging theorized that there is a genetic clock ticking away within each cell that determines when age sets in. The latest, and most
creditable, program theory of aging is the Telomeres are the end cap segments of DNA (our genetic material). New evidence supports the notion that telomeres are in fact "the clocks of aging." Each time a cell replaces a small piece of DNA is taken off the end of each chromosome. Every time a body cell replicates, the telomere gets shorter. The shorter the telomere gets, the more it affects the
way the cell expresses its genetic code. The result is cellular aging. It determines not only aging of the cell, but our risk for cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and other degenerative diseases. The Free Radical Theory is the best damage theory of aging. This theory contends that damage caused by free radicals contributes to aging and age associated disease. Free radicals may be derived from our
environment (sunlight, X rays, radiation, and chemicals), ingested in our food and drinks, or produced within our bodies, during chemical reactions. Most free radicals in the body are toxic forms of oxygen molecules. It is ironic that the oxygen molecule is the major source of free radical damage in our bodies. In one sense oxygen sustains our lives, in another it is responsible for much of the
destruction and aging of our cells. Compounds that prevent this type of damage are referred to as antioxidants. The damage from Free Radicals is not limited to our cell membranes and proteins; it also extends to our DNA. The difference in life spans among mammals are largely a result of an animal’s or human’s ability to repair DNA. Maximum human life span is about 120 years. Can life span be
increased and the aging process slowed? The answer is definitely "yes." Caloric Restrictions, Exercise,
PMF, therapy should be considered as a treatment method.
The basic cell of an organism can be influenced by a pulsing magnetic field of certain frequency and intensity. It is potential of cells within the organism differ from the norm, thus impairing the function of the cell. Pulsed magnetic fields completely penetrate through every cell. The improvement of oxygen saturation is due to the magnetic influences on hemoglobin at extremely low
frequencies. At the cellular level the effects are increased oxygen diffusion in the cells, increased cell metabolism and mineral exchange. Dietary Antioxidants – The level of antioxidant enzymes, as well as the level of dietary antioxidants such as beta-carotene, determines
the life span of mammals. Presumably the reason why some people outlive others is that they have higher levels of antioxidants in their cells. This type of thinking is largely the reason many progressive minded physicians recommend increasing the level of antioxidant mechanisms within the cells. Dietary antioxidants of significance in life extension include VITAMINS C & E, SELENIUM, BETA-CAROTENE, FLAVONOIDS, SULFUR-CONTAINING AMINO ACIDS, & COENZYME Q10. Not surprising these same nutrients are also of extreme significance in CANCER prevention, as aging and cancer share many common mechanisms. Perhaps
the most important dietary antioxidant for longevity is Carotene molecules. Consider the evidence, which demonstrates that carotenes do much more than serve as a precursor to Vitamins A. Included in these effects are potent antioxidants effects. It has been shown that a high intake of BETA-CAROTENE from dietary sources is associated with a reduced rate of cancers involving
epithelial
cells (lung, skin, interine cervis, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, etc.) High carotene intake may also offer significant benefit to the immune system, as the thymus gland is largely composed of epithelial cells. The thymus gland undergoes a process of involution (shrinking) during normal aging and stress. This is largely a result of free radical damage. Since carotenes are concentrated in
the epithelial cells of the thymus, they are able to significantly lessen thymus-gland involution. In addition, studies have shown that thymus gland mediated immune functions could be improved with carotene supplementation.
